to use a rifle. he's been awarded for his marksmanship. >> reporter: that's right. the u.s. navy quickly assembling what records it has on this man. and telling us he was a navy reservist. just until a few days ago, he separated from the naval service. we don't know when the last time is he showed up. but he has shooting expertise. let's go through it. according to navy records, he has been awarded the rifle marksman ribbon and the pistol expert medal. these are awarded for achieving a certain level of shooting accuracy at various distances. let's be clear. the plan is not a navy commander, he's not a navy s.e.a.l. he held a number of jobs as a reservist in navy security operations. in fact, he went to iraq, we are told, and had a job providing military security on iraqi oil platforms, to have that job, it is most likely we are told he did receive some advanced weapons training. you will remember back in those days, those oil platforms, a lot of concern about small boat attacks, sniper attacks, that sort of thing. so he clearly has a certain level, a worrisome level of weapons expertise.

a former navy s.e.a.l., chris kyle and his friend chad littlefield were shot and killed in ft. worth texas. the man who pulled the trigger is a veteran who kyle may have been trying to help with ptsd. susan candiotti joins us live with more. what do we know about how this happened? >> well, got some brand new information during the press conference. first of all, we learned about an alleged confession. and police say they think they also have found the murder weapon, when they describe as a semiautomatic handgun that was found at the suspect's house. let's back up a little bit. after the double shooting at that gun lodge, police say the suspected shooter who's 25-year-old eddie ray ralph took off in kyle's pickup truck. then they said that he went to his sister's house and told her and his brother what had happened, and then left that house. that's when the sister called the police. police put out an all points bulletin and tracked ralph, the suspect to his own house. now, the home was ringed, according to what one police lieutenant told me, with at least a dozen police officers. they trie

discharged from the u.s. navy reserve earlier this year. in fact, just a short time ago, after serving in several overseas jobs. basically as a security officer. he was a lieutenant. he had weapons training in the navy. but not a commando, not a navy s.e.a.l., this was basic security work. nonetheless, he had two awards critically. the rifle marksman ribbon, and the pistol expert medal. this meant he had some qualifications in shooting at some expert level at particular distances or ranges. i think, though, very clear we should also understand that he had expertise through his service as a police officer. many people, many police officers serve in the military reserve, and they have a lot of weapons expertise due to all of that. still, very concerning, obviously, because of his background. >> were you able to learn anything about did the military have any information on his mental health? >> reporter: well, this would be a matter of privacy concerns. but at the moment, they wouldn't publicly release that. at the moment, very preliminary, there is no indication of that, because he was h

now "cnn newsroom." a highly decorated navy s.e.a.l., considered one of the military's best snipers. chris kyle was shot and killed along with a friend at a gun range near ft. worth, texas. susan candiotti is joining us live from new york. how exactly the shooting unfold. >> what a tragedy. the sheriff tells me chris kyle and chad were at a shooting. they all apparently knew each other. kyle is well known for helps vets transition into civilian life, some of them suffering from posttraumatic stress. they appear to be alone at the range yesterday afternoon when this happened and the sheriff says they don't yet know what was behind the shooting, what prompted it they rorved, listen to this, 25 to 30 weapons, including handguns and longons and ak 47s. they're still trying to sort out which one was the murder weapon. now, after the shooting police say the suspect took off in former s.e.a.l. chris kyle's pickup truck. the bodies were not discovered for almost a couple of hours, 911 was called and investigators eventually found the suspect at his home about 75 miles away. he allegedly too

was a former navy lieutenant in the naval reserves. and now we are told that u.s. navy bases in california and nevada are on, quote, maintaining a heightened security posture, a heightened state of alert as they too are on the lookout for this man. and they do have some reason to know that he has approached the u.s. military in the last few days. a couple of days ago, they learned -- they discovered that he had stayed at a navy motel facility in san diego, and on wednesday he approached two navy sailors at his old unit when he was in the reserves, had a conversation with them, they did not realize they had been talking to dorner until they saw all the news reports. so a lot of concern now, in fact, a day ago, the point loma naval base shut down briefly while they thought he might be there. so now overnight the admiral in charge of the southwest region of the united states for the u.s. navy has ordered this heightened security posture. they're not talking exactly about what they're doing. i think we can well understand that they're going to check everybody's passes, everybody's access, as t

enjoining us. a real tragedy. in texas annishac war veteran facing murder charges gunning down a former navy seal who was claimed to be the most lethal sniper in u.s. military history. police say that this man, eddie ray routh shot and killed chris kyle and his friend at a shooting range in texas. routh is under suicide watch in jail, charged with two counts of murder. our joe johns is in stevenville, joe, some kind of disturbance involving the suspect overnight. tell us what happened there. >> reporter: it was a disturbance, michael. the short version is that jailers went into routh's cell, apparently to remove eating utensils, and the sheriff says he became aggressive with those jailers, he had to be daysed. they say he was put in a restraint chair, kept in that restraint chair overnight. however, we are told the jailers have been ordered to release him, if he agrees to work with them. he has been placed on suicide watch. he's in a cell by himself. and the sheriff says he would like to see some type of a psychiatric evaluation of the defendant. >> what's next in the case against him? does

for the ex-lapd officer and ex-navy lieutenant who has vowed revenge on the lapd by hunting down and killing officers anywhere he finds them. at work or at play. and not just them. their families, too. joining me is our cnn legal contributor who is watching the story as well. paul, as the police and officials try to find this man before he finds more agents -- he's already killed three and injured two, are the prosecutors trying to build a case so if and when they catch him and hopefully alive, they're ready to go in a prosecution and my guess is a death penalty prosecution? >> well, prosecutors are standing on the sidelines right now. i don't think they're actively involved. this is the police investigation. in terms of how a lawyer would look at the the situation and the lieutenant -- and i call him the lieutenant because he was in the military has to understand that his only way out is to voluntarily surrender. with law enforcement mounted against him. in the end if he gets into a firefighter he's going to wind up sked. . dead. a peaceful surrender can be arranged. that's the only way out

, he alleged 3 threatened to use his navy training to harm police officers involved in the case and their families. quoting here, i will bring unconventional and a symmetrical warfare to those in lapd uniform weather on or off duty. now an irvine couple is shot to death in the parking deck of their upscale complex. the victims are monica quan and her fiance. her father, randy was a retired cop who worked with dorner. inside night, police name christopher jordan dorner the chief suspect in the sunday night murders. police warees erous. dorner is say reservist known to be a skilled marksman. thursday around 1:30 in the morning, ktla reports doerner is spotted in corona. two police officers are in purr cute when dorner gets out of the truck and starts firing. one was grazed and the other not hurt. dorner flees. then a short time later, another shooting involving cops. this time in riverside. police say two officers on routine patrol are shot after being ambushed at an intersection. one officer is dead and another critically wounded. authorities are linking both shootings to dorner.

homicide. dorner was an officer in 2009 and reservist for the united states navy. of particular interest at this point in the investigation is a multipage manifesto in which the suspect has implicated himself in the slayings. >> in that manifesto dorner threatened to hurt police officers and their families according to the "l.a. times," dorner was angry with quan's father, he's now retired and may have been involved in dorner's firing in 2009. now the manifesto the writings were posted earlier on a message board. in the meantime authorities say dorner may be involved in three new shootings just this morning, near los angeles. one officer is dead and two others were hurt. on the phone right now, cnn's paul vercannon. this is frightening. >> it is. certainly the los angeles police department they have department headquarters at los angeles and numerous officers out to search for dorner. where one of the shootings occurred where an officer wound up dead and another hurt, they were going into a protective mode. you hear apparently dorner had threatened numerous officers and what they were do
